A cautionary tale in two pictures:
I also learned that the 2.5 pound pick axe ($21 and some change) from Home Depot, is not invincible. I dug five holes for five plants. In the process, I bent the flat side of the pick axe, and took several large chips out of the pointy end. (Many rocks were slain in the process.) When I pointed this out to my wife, she made disparaging comments about the quality of the tool. I, on the other hand, chose to praise the spirited and stiff resistance offered by the granite, and attempted to extract a compliment or two regarding the manly abilities necessary to bend a forged steel implement, to shatter rocks, and to notch the blade of my hefty axe.
Note to self: Be more subtle when fishing for compliments next time.
