San Bernardino Peak(s)

It was a good day for the Hiking Huntleys.  Victory over two 10,000'+ peaks!
We set out early this morning to climb both San Bernardino peaks.  The regular one (10,649') and the East peak (10,691').  The main peak, though shorter, is much more popular.  So besides a glorious sunset, we did see some cool stuff along the way.  We stopped at Washington Monument, which is the Initial Point for all land surveying in California.  It was initially set up by Colonel Henry Washington in 1852.  There isn't much left of it now.
There are a million little tags nailed onto it though.  Anyone know what they are for?
And, as you might expect from a meridian point referred to by three states...it has a pretty commanding view.  That's San Bernardino about 9,000' feet below us.

Not far past the monument is San Bernardino Peak and one mile past that is East San Bernardino Peak.  I seem to have lost my little American flag, so we don't have the traditional summit photos.  :-(

Cool!  Now all we have to do is hike back down again!

Mark said this was the farthest he had ever walked in one day.  Not bad!  Click here for a better map of our route.
